EYFS Intent

At Ann Edwards C of E Primary School, it is our intent that our EYFS curriculum will be broad, balanced, creative and inclusive and will build secure foundations for all of our children’s future learning and development from their varied starting points.  We place great value on providing the children with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to prepare them for life-long learning. We aim to embed those good habits for learning through the characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning:  Play and Exploration, Active Learning and Creative and Critical Thinking. We believe that early childhood is valid in itself as part of life and our curriculum is designed to reflect that, sparking curiosity, independence and resilience through playful investigation and enquiry within our indoor and outdoor enabling environments. We aim to work collaboratively with parents and carers, working in partnership to nurture the children to flourish in EYFS.

It is our intent that our curriculum is language rich and is underpinned by the promotion of early language and literacy development. We intend to offer extensive opportunities to use and embed new vocabulary in a range of contexts. We want to ensure that all children receive high quality teaching strategies of early reading, including systematic, synthetic phonics to learn to read words and simple sentences accurately by the end of Reception and to initiate a life-long love of stories, books and reading.

It is our intent to follow the children’s personal interests and individual needs, allowing us to plan and provide opportunities throughout our EYFS curriculum to motivate, engage and support learning and physical development for all our pupils to achieve their next steps. We aim to provide rich opportunities to help children to develop their ability to manage their own emotions and understand their feelings and those of others and to develop a positive sense of themselves, having confidence in their own abilities in preparation for their next steps into KS1.
